Much of the Explorer ship can and does run on its own via very advanced technology and Artificial Intelligent Programming. But there still sometimes needs a more hands-on active touch. Some of the crew on an Explorer ship may have specific roles.
Each Ship has the following Crew Roles at minimum
--Captain
--Engineering
--Supplies
Captain
The person put in overall command of the ship and its operations. Not necessarily an honor because of the responsibility placed on them.
Engineering
The person who is designated as being in charge of keeping the ship up and running. Responsible for ensuring things don't break, or are repaired timely, as well as maintenance.
Supplies
The Person responsible for making sure a crew has all they need in terms of supplies. The first inventory check-list comes pre-determined for each crew, but Supplies is encouraged to customize inventory for their individual ship's crew.
Larger ships will also have the following roles
--Second in Command
--Security/Morale
--Medical
Second in Command
The person to go to if the Captain is unable or compromised in some way. Not necessarily an honor because of the responsibility placed on them.
Security/Morale
The person in charge of keeping the crew safe, but also in charge of helping them all be harmonious. It can be tricky to balance the two roles. In the event that the Captain and Second-in-Command are unable to perform their roles, Security/Morale is next in the chain of command.
Medical
The person in charge of ensuring the crew is healthy, and for keeping them so. May overrule the Captain/Second-in-Command/Security/Morale in certain situations where the health and safety of a crew-member is critically threatened and the patient is unable to consent/have a reasonable and rational discussion of circumstances.
